Project Location

Mozambique – a country known for its diverse ecosystems and communities, ranging from tropical forests in the north to savannas and grasslands in the central and southern regions. Despite its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, Mozambique has endured challenges including poverty, political instability, and natural disasters such as cyclones and floods. The project took place across various regions, addressing both environmental and socio-economic concerns rooted in the country's history and ecological makeup.

Project Goals

The project aimed to revitalize Mozambique’s landscapes and support sustainable development through reforestation and community upliftment. Specific goals included:

  • Planting over 1.2 million indigenous trees to restore critical ecosystems
  • Combating the drivers of deforestation such as charcoal production, firewood consumption, uncontrolled burning, and shifting agriculture
  • Creating sustainable employment and land-use practices for local villagers
  • Reversing the long-term environmental impacts of Mozambique’s civil war, including forest fragmentation and bush elephant population decline

By integrating large-scale reforestation with economic development, the project sought to improve biodiversity and foster long-term sustainability.

Project Impact

Over 2.5 years, the project successfully planted 1.2 million trees, significantly revitalizing the landscape and contributing to the restoration of vital ecosystems. Key impacts include:

  • Enhanced biodiversity through the re-establishment of native forest areas
  • Stable employment opportunities for local villagers, lifting communities out of extreme poverty
  • Implementation of sustainable land-use practices that improve long-term community well-being
  • Protection and regeneration of wildlife habitats, helping secure Mozambique’s biodiversity for future generations

This initiative has made a lasting difference by aligning environmental restoration with social and economic development, ensuring a more resilient future for both people and nature.
